Oscars don’t sound like a faraway affair anymore with our desi entries rocking the foreign shores…we talk about girl power and women's lib but what do these really signify… have we really come a long way from our conservative and may I add a 'proud' conservative social structure. Still it isn’t very uncommon to see the aunty brigade that goes around the colony literally sniffing around for girls, who have attained the so called marriageable age. They would do anything to get a girl married from friendly matchmaking to powder cake photo sessions or even black magic. Phew!! All this while, no one would even bother to know if the poor girl wants to marry at all. She is twenty something, educated, possibly even earning well and that’s all they need to get after her life. She is a mere show piece who should be packaged and delivered before any spoilage. As if that was not enough, the bigger picture would start with the alliances coming her way. Common' guys we can do better than that. I am not advocating for the allergic to men types, but all I want to know is that, why aren’t we able to treat the whole affair with a little more decency. Marriages are a beautiful bond between two individuals and one must respect each other as much they respect themselves. It isn’t a boxing match between the families. I believe in the power of love and I have seen how it changes lives. It isn’t fair to demean someone jus because she/he loves you. Enjoy life together.. live it don’t just exist..
